Sources said Mr Joshi has resigned from primary membership of the BJP to bring about a truce between Mr Gadkari and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has had a bitter rivalry with Mr Joshi for years and was opposed to his being brought back into the party.

Narendra Modi has agreed to attend his party's national executive in Mumbai. The Gujarat Chief Minister, who is in Udaipur, had orchestrated a trip to Rajasthan as a form of boycott. He was upset that his old rival, Sanjay Joshi, would be present in Mumbai.
