Sarpanch Murdered

A Kashmiri Pandit sarpanch, who was shot dead by terrorists in Anantnag on Monday, was cremated here in the presence of scores of mourners including leaders of the Congress, the BJP and other organisations.

Enraged by the death of a terrorist who targeted a former sarpanch in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian yesterday, a frenzied mob set the family's house on fire this afternoon. Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh's family had offered resistance to the terrorists and during the scuffle, a gun went off and a terrorist was killed.

Fear has gripped many in the Kashmir valley after two sarpanches were murdered by terrorists in the last two weeks. There are reports that nearly 150 panchayat members have quit since Monday fearing for their life.

The panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir last April were seen as a victory for democracy against the rule of terror and intimidation in the state. But now that euphoria is giving way to fear again.

The infighting within the ranks of the CPI-Maoist party in Odisha is out in the open.
