The late night raids at former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden residence in Chennai on Friday has netted them original documents of shell companies allegedly floated by VK Sasikala's family after demonetization, income tax officials claimed.

The corruption case in which VK Sasikala has been convicted today was, in fact, centered on whether J Jayalalithaa misused her first term as Chief Minister in the 1990s to accumulate a vast fortune of real estate, cash and jewellery through a maze of companies which were owned by Ms Sasikala and two of her male relatives.

As VK Sasikala escalates a bid to become Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, public unease against her possible ascension is rising - in part fuelled by her business interests and that of her family.
