The Supreme Court today granted bail to whistleblower Anand Rai in a matter related to )the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe Act (Prevention of Atrocity Act) 1989 (SC/ST Act).

The Supreme Court has recalled a 2018 order that was seen to dilute provisions of a law protecting Dalits. This means the ban on automatic arrest in cases under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989, and the need for sanction before arrests linked to violation of the law stand withdrawn.

"Bharat bandh" Punjab has rescheduled Class 10 and 12 board exams, which was to be held today, due to security concerns over a nationwide bandh called by some Dalit organisations against a recent Supreme Ruling that they say goes against the welfare of people bracketed under Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories.

The Central government is likely to file a review petition in the Supreme Court on Monday in the top court's recent order diluting certain provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, informed sources said on Sunday.

Jharkhand Mukti Morch leader Hemant Soren has lodged a complaint against police officer Anurag Gupta under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, for using "humiliating words" against him.

Amid a boycott by most opposition parties, Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill which provides for stringent action against those compelling any member of Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe communities to carry human or animal carcasses or do manual scavenging.
