Rescuers, army and police have evacuated about 1,000 people from cars and buses stranded in deep snow in northern Serbia, but several hundred people still remain stuck, the government said on Saturday.

At least 11,000 villagers have been trapped by heavy snow and blizzards in Serbia's mountains, authorities said on Thursday, as the death toll from Eastern Europe's weeklong deep freeze rose to 123, many of them homeless people.
