Shimla Municipal Polls

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated the party workers on Thursday for a big victory in the Shimla Municipal Corporation polls, saying people have reposed their faith in the party.

The ruling Congress today swept the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) polls with two-third majority by winning 24 wards out of total 34, wresting the prestigious civic body from the BJP.

The BJP on Saturday created history for the first time in three decades by winning the maximum seats in a 34-member house of the Shimla Municipal Corporation, but it failed to get a simple majority of 18 members. Its supported candidates won 17 seats.

At least 154 candidates in 34 wards have filed nominations for the Shimla Municipal Corporation or SMC election scheduled on June 16.

The elections to Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) to be held by end of this month have been postponed following complaints of large scale discrepancies in electoral rolls.

In a triangular contest, the Congress was on Monday voted out of power from the Shimla Municipal Corporation after 26 years of rule, its candidates for the two top posts biting dusts, months ahead of the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections.

Polling began on Sunday morning for the Shimla Municipal Corporation, one of India's oldest civic bodies, with the mayor and the deputy mayor to get elected directly by voters for the first time. Electors could be seen reaching polling stations even before voting started at 7 am.
