Asia's Largest Ship Breaking Yard At Gujarat To Soon Dismantle Warships

The Ministry of Shipping has decided to develop Asia's largest ship-breaking yard at Alang as an eco-friendly yard. The yard will be the only such place in the world where even warships will be dismantled.

When the CCGS Amundsen breaks through a 10-foot (or thicker) piece of ice, it rides on top of it first, the whole front of the ship sliding onto the sheet as the boat comes to a stop. Then the ship, 100 yards long and weighing 6,000 tons, crushes down, and its sharp hull splits the ice and pushes the fragments to either side.

Five persons were killed today and seven others injured when a blast triggered by a suspected gas leak took place in a ship being dismantled at the Alang ship-breaking yard in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat.

The Supreme Court has allowed Exxon Valdez, which caused one of the worst US oil spills, to be dismantled in the country but required the owner to pay for disposal of any toxic materials found on the ship.
