Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Tuesday said food items served to the poor under a government scheme will be given as takeaway parcels in view of the COVID-19 restrictions currently in force in the state.

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday informed the Bombay High Court that migrants can use ration cards from their home states to get essentials from ration shops in Mumbai and those without cards can get meals at food camps and Shiv Bhojan Thali centres.

Huge demand for the highly- subsidised 'Shiv Bhojan' thali and resulting chaos forced the owner of a distribution centre in Pune to take the help of police to manage the crowd.

The Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government on Sunday launched its much-awaited ''Shiv Bhojan'' scheme, which is aimed at providing a meal to the poor for just Rs 10, on the occasion of the 71st Republic Day.
