Shyam Benegal To Head Censor Board

A government-constituted panel headed by filmmaker Shyam Benegal has recommended that the censor board should categorise rather than "use scissors" to cut films while suggesting new categories classifying movies.

The committee headed by eminent filmmaker Shyam Benegal to look into the revamp of the censor board met Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley in Mumbai today. The government had set up the committee on January 1.

Censor Board Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani on Friday welcomed the Information and Broadcasting Ministry's decision to form a panel, to be headed by veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal, for revamping of the board.

The 23-member censor board is currently headed by film-maker Pahlaj Nihalani, whose decisions have often triggered pushback from other members. Several filmmakers have complained of arbitrary objections and unnecessary cuts sought by the Board
