Slum Dwellers Eviction

The Supreme Court on Monday directed not to take any coercive action relating to the removal of 'jhuggis' in Sarojini Nagar area of the national capital until further orders.

Delhi Urban Development Minister Satyendar Jain on Wednesday wrote to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal regarding detailed plans to provide "pucca" houses to poor families living in 48,000 slums along railway tracks in the national capital.

The Delhi High Court on Monday said forced and unannounced eviction of slum dwellers is contrary to law and the authorities should ensure that the displaced people are immediately rehabilitated.

The Delhi High Court was told today that granting relief to slum-dwellers of Rangpuri Pahadi here, who are facing eviction, would embolden the encroachers and will adversely affect efforts of the forest department to protect the Ridge land.

More than 300 families, who were evicted from a slum in Kolkata's eastern part to make way for an upcoming flyover, have threatened to use the 'None of the Above' or NOTA option in the Lok Sabha election if they are not rehabilitated by the state government.
