National Handloom Day 2020: On the occasion of National Handloom Day, several leaders and celebrities took to social media, urging people to be "vocal for local" and handmade products, and asking them to choose clothing made by Indian brands.

Union Minister Smriti Irani said that the Centre will skill 30,000 people in Meghalaya under the 'Samarth' scheme in apparel, textiles and handloom sectors.

The union ministry of textiles today marked the second National Handloom Day with a series of events in the Prime Minister's constituency in Varanasi during which weavers were awarded and a number of agreements were inked in the presence of union minister Smriti Irani.

In an attempt to encourage support for weavers, the minister shared a picture of herself dressed in a handwoven silk saree from Bihar, hashtagged #IWearHandloom on Monday. Starting a social media campaign, Ms Irani has urged people to follow suit and share pictures of themselves in handloom textiles, tagging five others.
