Ponds, ambulances, solar street lights and medical facilities are some of the demands that the villagers in Maharashtra's Palghar district want met before they agree to the government's ambitious bullet train project, say officials.

France on Thursday inaugurated the world's first "solar highway", a road paved with solar panels providing enough energy to power the street lights of the small Normandy town of Tourouvre.

Three cities in Andhra Pradesh-- Vijaywada, Nellore and Tirupati-- will soon have solar street lighting systems on the lines of Vishakhapatnam, P Narayana, Minister for Municipal Administration, said in Vijaywada.

The solar cells currently put the electricity they generate onto the national grid, but future plans include using the energy to power street lights, and even refuel electric vehicles wirelessly.
