Rahul Gandhi took over as Congress president today from his mother Sonia Gandhi, who led India's oldest party for 19 years. The 47-year-old, who has for years been seen as a reluctant politician but has lately shown signs of shedding that image, took charge in a ceremony on the lawns of the party's 24 Akbar Road headquarters in Delhi.

Sonia Gandhi seemed to be in good health as she chaired an hour-long meeting at her home today, said her party colleagues. This was her first public appearance after she returned to Delhi a few days ago from the US, where she underwent surgery.

Like her departure to America five weeks ago, Sonia Gandhi's return this morning was a well-kept secret. She landed in Delhi early this morning on a British Airways flight escorted by her daughter, Priyanka. Mrs Gandhi's son, Rahul, met them at the airport.
