Spacex Dragon Cargo Ship

An unmanned Russian cargo ship launched successfully Monday with a load of supplies for the International Space Station.

A ball-shaped artificial intelligence robot nicknamed the "flying brain" because it is trained to follow and interact with a German astronaut blasted off Friday toward the International Space Station aboard SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship.

SpaceX's unmanned Dragon cargo ship left the International Space Station Saturday carrying 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms) of gear and prepared to splash down in the Pacific Ocean by mid-afternoon, NASA said.

SpaceX's unmanned Dragon cargo ship arrived Wednesday at the International Space Station, packed with food, gear and science experiments for the astronauts living in orbit.

The latest mission is SpaceX's 11th cargo resupply trip to the ISS under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA.

The lightning did not hit any of SpaceX's equipment but happened within 10 miles (16 kilometers) of the launch pad.

The launch of SpaceX's 11th commercial resupply mission aboard an unmanned Dragon cargo ship is scheduled for 5:55pm (2155 GMT) on June 1.

SpaceX is poised to blast off its next delivery of food, supplies and science experiments to the astronauts living at the International Space Station on Thursday.

"We are excited to announce that SpaceX has been approached to fly two private citizens on a trip around the moon late next year," said a statement by CEO Elon Musk.

This time, the Dragon cargo ship made a "perfect approach to the capture point," a NASA commentator said.

"Dragon is in good health and will make another rendezvous attempt with the @Space_ Station Thursday morning."

SpaceX aborted a planned rendezvous between an unmanned Dragon cargo ship and the International Space Station Wednesday because of a GPS problem.

The SpaceX Dragon resupply ship is targeted to lift off atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center.

With more private spaceship traffic expected at the International Space Station in the coming years, two US astronauts are set to embark on a spacewalk on Friday to install a special parking spot for them.

The company's Dragon capsules are currently the only ships that can return cargo from the ISS.
