Flooding and landslides killed at least 91 people and left another 110 missing in Sri Lanka as the monsoon set in Friday, dumping record rainfalls in many parts of the island, authorities said.

Rescuers on Sunday pulled out 23 more bodies from the debris of disastrous landslides in Sri Lanka, taking the toll to 92 while over 100 people remained missing in floods triggered by rains even as relief aid poured in from across the world, including India, for lakhs displaced.

Sri Lanka's government has raised the death toll from landslides and heavy flooding around the island nation to 73, as soldiers continue searching for scores of people missing since deadly landslides struck the hill country several days ago.

Heavy rains today pounded the central Sri Lankan region where at least three villages have already been swallowed by mountains of mud, forcing soldiers and police to suspend rescue work. At least 18 people are known to have been killed and hundreds are reported missing in the landslides so far.
