Mysuru's big Vijayadashami procession - which starts at the Amba Vilas palace and winds its way through the city - was held on Tuesday. Ending months of speculation, 23-year-old US educated Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs was finally adopted as the titular head of the Mysore royal family, after the death of Srikantadatta Narisimharaja Wodeyar in 2013. Following the ceremony the new heir took a ride on a silver chariot in the evening to greet well-wishers and members of the public.

Thousands of grief-stricken people on Wednesday bid a tearful farewell to Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar as his mortal remains were consigned to the flames in the royal cemetery in Mysore just before sunset.

He lived like a Maharaja although he was not one technically or legally and inherited palaces but sans a kingdom.

Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar from the former royal family of Mysore and who was recently elected president of the Karnataka cricket association, died of a heart attack in Bangalore today.
