The number of deaths in Sikkim's flash flood has risen to 34, officials in the state said on Monday, while the administration in adjoining northern West Bengal said that 40 bodies have been fished from the downstream of Teesta River.

Emergency workers from the national and state disaster response forces are playing a critical role in relief and rescue operations across north India, where incessant rainfall in the last three days has wreaked havoc, claiming at least 19 lives.

Flood-like situation in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka has hampered normal life. Both states received extremely heavy rainfall in the last few days. The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has started rescue operations in the affected areas of the two states.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the entire nation stands with Bengal and "no stone will be left unturned" to help those affected by yesterday's devastating cyclone Amphan.
