The pilgrimage to Kedarnath by road was put on hold on Saturday after part of the trek route caved in near Jungle Chatti leaving thousands of pilgrims returning from the Himalayan temple stranded.

According to officials, 110 pilgrims stranded on the Rambada-Chaumasi track have also been evacuated and taken to Chaumasi.

The Indian Air Force's Chinook and Mi-17 helicopters today joined the rescue operations in Uttarakhand to evacuate pilgrims still stranded on the rain-ravaged trek route to Kedarnath.

In a tragic incident, about 8-9 km ahead of Gangotri on the Gomukh footpath, 30-40 pilgrims were stranded and two washed away when a temporary bridge collapsed due to a sudden increase in water flow in a river at Devgad in Uttarakhand on Friday.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Tuesday rescued 182 stranded pilgrims on board a ferry off Kakdwip in West Bengal, a statement said.

The Indian Coast Guard today rescued about 175 pilgrims in West Bengal who had been stranded in the sea since last night.
