Chandigarh's Sukhna Lake Reopens Month After Bird Flu Scare

Sukhna Lake, regarded as the 'lifeline' of the city of Chandigarh, has been thrown open to visitors after a month. The tourist spot was shut in the wake of the avian flu threat, that came to light after a sample of dead goose tested positive for the deadly virus on December 16.

Chandigarh's Sukhna Lake has been declared a "Bird Flu-hit zone" and the lake has been closed to the public indefinitely. The authorities decided to cull around 70 geese after 30 were found to have died over the last 10 days.
