Supply Of Water In Trains

To quench the thirst of a parched and desperate Chennai, facing severe water scarcity, trains will soon be carrying water from Jolarpet in northern Tamil Nadu, some 200 kilometres from the state capital. Chennai is facing a 40 per cent cut in piped water supply as all four reservoirs outside the city have gone dry.

Heavy rains in most parts of Maharashtra notwithstanding, the parched Latur city and surroundings continue to be supplied drinking water through the 'Jaldoot' special train operated by Indian Railways, an official said in Latur on Saturday.

Accusing the Centre of playing politics over water-train issue, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today asked it to send tankers in large numbers to the parched Bundelkhand region for supply of water from dams and canals there.

Water will be brought to Latur district by trains in the next 15 days while prohibitory orders were clamped near water supply spots in Parbhani town to prevent any violence as authorities grapple with drought in the worst-hit Marathwada region of Maharashtra.

Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer Sandeep Silas, arrested along with two others in connection with alleged corruption in supply of packaged drinking water in Rajdhani and other superfast trains, was today granted bail by a Delhi court.

A special court today sent two senior rail officers and a businessman arrested in connection with the alleged corruption in supply of packaged drinking water in Rajdhani and other superfast trains to five-day CBI custody.

In the small hours of last night, huge parts of North India were plunged in darkness as the Northern Grid collapsed. Many people in eight states have spent the night and much of the morning without electricity. It has affected trains, metro services in Delhi and water supply across the states.
