The Supreme Court came down heavily on the Centre on Tuesday for failing to take any decision for years on the pension payable to retired regular captains of the Army in accordance with the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme.

The Supreme Court on Monday said the Centre is duty-bound to comply with its 2022 judgement on the payment of One Rank One Pension arrears to ex-service personnel.

The Ministry of Defence has told the Supreme Court that it has initiated the process of withdrawing its communication on payment of One Rank-One Pension (OROP) arrears in four instalments and gave a time schedule for payment of the arrears.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala asked the ministry to immediately withdraw its January 20 communication, which said OROP arrears will be paid in four installments.
