In a move to ban commercial surrogacy, a bill was today introduced in the Lok Sabha which also seeks to protect women from exploitation and ensure the rights of the child born through surrogacy.

As many as nine new bills, including three related to GST, and surrogacy regulation will be introduced in Parliament in upcoming Winter Session.

A draft law that aims to make surrogacy 'legal and transparent' in India was today cleared by the cabinet. The Surrogacy Bill, 2016 seeks to protect the rights of both the surrogate and the child. The government has announced that it will take up the Bill in the Winter Session of the parliament later this year.

The union cabinet will take up a draft bill on Wednesday which aims to safeguard the rights of surrogate mothers. The bill will then be introduced in parliament in the winter session, said sources.

There is no law regulating single-parent surrogacy in the country and the government is in the process of finalising the draft for a bill on surrogacy regulation which is likely to be placed before Parliament soon, the Rajya Sabha was today informed.
