Sushma Swaraj And Aung San Suu Kyi

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today met Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations across different sectors.

In what can be seen as a milestone in New Delhi's "Neighbourhood First" policy, Myanmar's State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi will pay a state visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from October 17 to 19.

Myanmar is an important neighbor of India and both countries have enjoyed a very close relationship in the past. But despite the physical proximity and the close relationship of the past, the distance between the two countries was allowed to increase because Myanmar came under military rule and remained under it for decades.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived here today to hold talks with the top Myanmarese leadership, including State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi, in pursuance of India's 'Act East Policy'.
