Hearing a PIL that claimed there is only one laboratory for testing swine flu in the city, the Bombay High Court has asked Maharashtra government to inform how many such labs exist in the state and take steps to increase such facilities all over.

To combat the outbreak of swine flu in the country, the Centre has established a network of 21 laboratories equipped to test the H1N1 virus and is providing logistics support for drugs, masks and personal protective equipment and vaccines, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

A day after NDTV reported on how tests for swine flu cost between Rs 3000 and Rs 9000 per test in Delhi's private labs, the Centre has taken note and the Delhi government has acted on it. Delhi's Health Minister Dr Satender Jain has now announced that the cost of swine flu tests in private labs will be capped at Rs 4500.

For Rs 9000, your samples will be collected from your house if you want to get tested for swine flu.

Tamil Nadu government on Saturday said it has allowed five private laboratories to conduct swine flu tests.

So far, H1N1 tests are being conducted by 18 government testing labs -- the bulk of it by NIV in Pune and NCDC in Delhi.

The National Institute of Virology gets more than 600 swab tests each day when it has a capacity to handle just about 300.
