Takata was embroiled in one Japan's worst corporate scandals in recent years after admitting it fabricated faulty airbag inflators that could explode and send metal shrapnel into vehicle compartments.

The most recent previous fatal confirmed U.S. incident was the June 2018 death of a driver after the crash of a 2002 Honda Civic in Buckeye, Arizona.

Honda Motor Co has agreed to pay $85 million to settle an investigation by most U.S. states into its use of defective Takata airbag inflators in its vehicles, according to a consent order made public on Tuesday.

The latest exercise takes the overall number of recalled vehicles, equipped with airbags manufactured by Takata, by the company to 3.13 lakh units in India.

The Japanese carmaker and its Chinese joint venture partner Guangqi Honda will start withdrawing vehicles fitted with the potentially faulty airbags beginning October 23 and will include Accord, Fit, City, Crosstour and Everus S1 models.

GM and its joint venture partner Shanghai GM will start withdrawing vehicles fitted with the potentially faulty airbags beginning next month and will include Chevrolet and Buick cars. They will replace the faulty airbags for free.

Honda Motor Co (7267.T) on Friday released a 2013 email in which one of its engineers suggested that he knew some hidden truth about "the root cause" of Takata Corp (7312.T) air bag failures, but the engineer later said he was mistaken.

Over 23,000 Toyota Corolla Altis has been recalled in India as part of the company's ongoing global recall. We had told you last week that the Japanese automaker has recalled 2.9 million Toyota Corolla Altis globally and now the company has confirmed that 23,157 units are from India.

Toyota has recently issued a recall for 2.9 million cars across Japan, China, Oceania and other regions, including India to replace faulty Takata airbags. It is said that about 23,000 Toyota Corolla Altis that were sold in India are also a part of this global recall.

The list of affected vehicles includes names such as the 2016-2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe/Convertible and numerous 2016 and 2017 Ferrari models.
