The state-run lignite miner has three opencast lignite mines of total capacity of 28.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, and one open cast lignite mine of capacity 2.1 MTPA at Barsingsar, Rajasthan.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered the suspension of mining and transportation of minerals including garnet, Ilemnite and rutile across the state till all 71 beach mineral mining quarries are investigated for irregularities.

People from Viapar, a coastal village in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district, say they have never seen sea waves reach so close to their homes. Several neighbouring villages echo the same story as years of illegal mining have led to heavy beach erosion across the region.

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a probe into reports of alleged illegal mineral mining in the Tuticorin district. Revenue Secretary Mr Gagandeep Singh Bedi will head the team and submit its report within a month.

Ashish Kumar, who was the District Collector of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu till two days ago, was handed his transfer order on Tuesday evening. Earlier that day, he had conducted raids on mineral quarries owned by local mining barons in two villages in the district.
