J Jayalalithaa, who is in a Bangalore prison after being convicted of corruption, has appealed against her verdict and applied for bail in the Karnataka High Court, which will hear her case tomorrow. In Chennai, her loyal aide O Panneerselvam has taken over as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

80 prisoners on 1 day fast over delay in taking up their pleas

Eighty undertrials and prisoners at Central Jail in Coimbatore resorted to a one day fast on Monday protesting the delay in taking up their pleas on detaining them under the Goondas Act. Police said these prisoners, including those involved in robberies and house breaking, wanted the Advisory Committee to hear their petitions at the earliest.
