• Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa protests partial decontrol of sugar sector

  The Tamil Nadu government today strongly protested the Centre's decision to partially decontrol sugar sector, saying the move to remove levy obligation on sugar mills and decontrol the regulated release mechanism will adversely impact supply of the sweetener through Public Distribution System (PDS).

• India may not export sugar for up to 3 years

  India, the world's biggest sugar producer after Brazil, is unlikely to export the sweetener for up to three years as high production costs price shipments out of the global market and a drought in major growing regions squeezes output.

• Tamil Nadu planning to produce 183 mw of power from bagasse

  Tamil Nadu government is working towards producing around 183 MW of electricity from bagasse acquired from 12 sugar mills in the state from February next, State Industries Minister P Thangamani said on Wednesday.
