Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday met industrialist Ratan Tata and thanked him for Tata's upcoming Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant in his state.

"Tata Group has submitted an application to set up a semiconductor processing plant in Assam with an investment of Rs 40,000 crore," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday

Renesas is looking to produce chipsets that the company is developing in partnership with leading software company TCS in India, according to a senior official of the chipmaker. The Japanese semiconductor company will develop SoCs with TCS initially for 4G, 5G telecom networks and industrial technologies.

Reportedly, Tata is talking to the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana and scouting for land for the outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) plant.

Tata group is in talks with three states to invest up to $300 million to set up a semiconductor assembly and test unit, two sources familiar with the matter said, as part of the conglomerate's push into high-tech manufacturing.

India is offering more than $1 billion (roughly Rs. 7,340 crores) in cash to each semiconductor company that sets up manufacturing units in the country as it seeks to build on its smartphone assembly industry and strengthen its electronics supply chain, two officials said.
