Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday attended the ceremonial distribution of financial incentives to around 370 tea gardens under the Assam Tea Industry Special Incentive Schemes 2020 at a function held at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati.

The Assam government has earmarked nearly Rs 550 crore for the state's tea industry, a welcome move as it grapples under a long-drawn financial crisis.

At a time when organic tea variety is gaining popularity, an Assam-based startup offers 'ghost pepper' and 'gold' tea among its 40-odd speciality blends.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said On Wednesday, as per the feedback received from the industry, exports of specific products such as pharmaceuticals, telecom instruments, tea, coffee, and marine goods from India are likely to be affected due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Altogether, 45.86 million kg tea was exported from India between January to March in 2021. The figure was 52.85 million kg in 2020.

The tea industry of Assam, which is the backbone of the state's economy, is now facing a drought-like situation due to rainfall deficit after having recovered from the losses it suffered due to the COVID-enforced lockdown last year.

The Indian Tea Association on Monday hiked the minimum per day wage of workers by an interim amount of Rs 26. This was after the Gauhati High Court put the onus on raising wages on tea plantation owners. The decision was taken at a meeting of the association's national committee.

In a bid to encourage Assam's tea industry towards producing more export-quality orthodox tea, Assam Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Friday announced to add more subsidies for those choosing orthodox over CTC teas, along with the ones the Tea Board of India, Assam provides.
