The Indian Tea Association on Monday hiked the minimum per day wage of workers by an interim amount of Rs 26. This was after the Gauhati High Court put the onus on raising wages on tea plantation owners. The decision was taken at a meeting of the association's national committee.

Death Count In Assam Toxic Liquor Tragedy Crosses 143, 200 In Hospital

As many as 45 tea plantation workers died on Sunday, pushing the death count in Assam's worst mass alcohol poisoning case in years beyond 143. At least 200 others - 17 of them critical - are still being treated at hospitals across the state, news agency AFP quoted police as saying.

The number of tea plantation workers who died after consuming toxic illicit liquor in Assam has gone up to 120. More than350 people are in hospital. The deaths come less than two weeks after more than 100 people died in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand from drinking illegally produced alcohol, known locally as hooch or country liquor.
