  TDR shall be filed within the time limits prescribed under railwayrules for obtaining refund. It can be processed only if the customer was not able to perform the journey due to any of the reasons mentionedby the Indian Railways.

  After online filing of TDR, IRCTC forwardsthe claim to concerned railways to process the refund. The refund amount is credited back to same account through which payment was made, according to IRCTC.

  Railway Train Ticket Cancellation, Refund Rules For AC I, AC 2, AC 3, Sleeper Class

  In case of cancellation of a train by Indian Railways, an automatic refund is granted for e-tickets. Filing of a TDR or train ticket deposit receipt is not required.

  IRCTC Train Ticket Cancellation, Refund Rules For Confirmed, RAC And Waitlisted Tickets

  According to rules on train ticket reservation cancellation, no refund of fare is admissible on the ticket having confirmed reservation in case ticket is not cancelled or TDR (ticket deposit receipt) not filed online up to four hours before the scheduled departure, according to the IRCTC website.

  Facing shortage of currency notes of lower denominations coupled with heavy rush at booking counters, the railways has stopped giving refund for cancellation of tickets in cash and instead issuing ticket deposit receipts (TDR).

  There shall not be any requirement for cancellation/filing of ticket deposit receipt (TDR) for refund of e-tickets in case of cancellation of trains.
