Yakub Memon was hanged a little before 7 am on Thursday morning in a Nagpur prison, less than two hours after the Supreme Court dismissed his final appeal against his hanging in an unprecedented hearing that was held within the court premises in the middle of the night.

Days before Yakub Memon -- the man convicted for the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai that killed over 250 people -- is to be executed, his wife Rahin has appealed to the judiciary and the government to commute his death sentence to life term.

Yakub Memon, convicted for helping plan and execute the serial blasts in Mumbai in 1993, has appealed again to the Supreme Court to stop his hanging, scheduled for July 30. His wife visited him in jail in Nagpur today.
