Women rights activists called "unfortunate" the decision to prematurely release Jessica Lal murder case convict Manu Sharma, saying it sets a wrong precedent. He was freed from prison for "satisfactory jail conduct".

The Tihar Jail has inaugurated a semi-open prison complex for its women inmates along with a beauty parlour and fashion lab on Thursday, officials said.

The Delhi Commission for Women has issued notice to the Tihar jail and and the Delhi Police seeking details of a rape convict who was set free before completion of his sentence.

Madhumita Pandey was only 22 when she first went to Tihar Jail in New Delhi to meet and interview convicted rapists in India. Over the past three years, she has interviewed 100 of them for her doctoral thesis at the criminology department of Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.

The Delhi High Court was on Monday informed by the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DLSA) that 51 women out of 152 women undertrial prisoners, who have been languishing in Tihar jail for more than six months or completed half of their sentences in lesser offences, have been released on bail.

In an effort to empower the women inmates of Delhi's Tihar jail, an e-Library has been set up in its premises which would cater only to them.
