Tripura Teachers Protest

Members of right-wing group Bajrang Dal staged a protest at a private Christian missionary-run school in Tripura's capital Agartala today after a teacher allegedly prohibited a student from wearing a wristband adorned with a religious symbol.

Over 100 people, including security personnel and schoolteachers protesting their termination, were injured in Agartala on Wednesday, after the police used force to thwart the protesters' attempt to picket outside Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb's official residence. Over 200 protesters were arrested.

Leader of the agitating teachers Bimal Saha and other teachers told the media on Sunday that they would intensify their agitations if the state's BJP-led government does not take steps to protect their jobs.

Teachers recruitment and termination of their jobs by the courts was a key political issue ahead of the February 2018 Tripura assembly polls.
