General Motors' self-driving car company Cruise is sending vehicles without anybody behind the wheel in San Francisco, California, US, as it navigates its way toward launching a robotic taxi service that would compete against Uber and Lyft in the hometown of the leading ride-hailing services.

Tata Group, which owns Tata Motors and Jaguar, previously invested at least $100 million in Uber.

The 90-day pilot is a surprise move for Maven and GM, which with Lyft announced a programme in March called Express Drive.

Lyft is testing autonomous cars on the streets of San Francisco and Phoenix in partnership with General Motors.

"We're not in a race to be first," CEO Mark Fields said at the company's Palo Alto research and development lab.

It is the latest push by traditional carmakers to enter the taxi ride hailing services market dominated by technology companies like Uber.

Automakers now recognise they may turn ride-hailing services and car sharing companies into steady customers for all sorts of vehicles.

The Scoop application connects people who live in the same neighbourhoods and work near each other to arrange carpools.

"You'll hear more from us as this year goes on," Chairman Bill Ford said, adding the company would consider acquisitions "if we thought that was the right way to go."

Tim Cook said investing in the leading Chinese ride sharing service could expand its presence in that "very, very important" market, and serve other ends as well.

The initiative is the first to come out of a two-month-old partnership between the automotive giant and ride service upstart.

GM on Tuesday said that it snapped workers and technology from ride-sharing and delivery service Sidecar, revving its drive into a future of autonomous on-demand cars.

This week the automotive empire struck back at the would-be disruptors of its century-old business model.

Uber General Manager Sailesh Sawlani was today attacked by a member of the Swabhimani Sanghtana outside the Maharashtra Transport Commissioner's office in Mumbai. Mr Sawlani was not harmed as the traffic police personnel intervened in time.
