The film 'Udta Punjab' releases today after weeks of bickering and stress for its makers as the censor board called for multiple cuts and refused to clear it until the court stepped in.

Udta Punjab will be released on Friday as scheduled with the film clearing one last hurdle when the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed a petition against it on Thursday. Hours before it hit theatres, producer Anurag Kashyap made an appeal in a Facebook post.

Two days before 'Udta Punjab' is slated for release, an NGO has petitioned the Supreme Court against a Bombay High Court order directing the Censor Board to clear the film with one cut.

The film Udta Punjab can be released with only one cut, the Bombay High Court today told the Censor Board. The court wants only one scene of involving urination to be cut and the disclaimer modified.

The Bombay High Court has reminded Pahlaj Nihalani, chief of the Central Board of Film Certification, that his job is to certify films not censor them.

Leading filmmaker Shyam Benegal has said that Udta Punjab is a "very important film," and that the same set of rules cannot be applied to everything since "films are not made in a factory," referring to the censorship of the film, which deals with the drug menace in Punjab.

Top filmmakers today attended a press conference to say they stand with producer Anurag Kashyap's "Udta Punjab," and made a strong pitch for freedom of speech, attacking Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani, who has ordered 89 cuts in the film.
