The UGC highlighted that certain individuals and organisations are offering online programmes with acronyms similar to recognised degree programmes in higher education.

The commission also noted that it will also suggest measures to control violations.

Currently 20 institutions figured as fake universities in the list of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and three have been added in the list in the last three years, the Central government told the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday declared 20 universities as "fake" and not empowered to confer any degree with Delhi having eight such institutions, the highest.

UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain said, "It has come to the notice of the UGC that "All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Sciences (AIIPHS) State Government University" is offering various degree courses in gross violation of the UGC Act, 1956."

National Institute of Management Solutions, New Delhi, is not authorized to admit students in any Bachelor/Master degree programmes on behalf of any other University, UGC said.

The UGC has informed students and public at large that at present these 23 fake universities are functioning in various parts of the country in contravention of the UGC Act.

Fake universities have been identified in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha and Puducherry.
