French politician Emmanuel Macron has said Britain's financial firms should only retain "passporting" rights to do business in Europe after Brexit if London keeps contributing to the European Union budget, according to the Guardian newspaper.

Weeks after the UK declined to deport embattled businessman Vijay Mallya, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said countries must cooperate when people flee after breaking law.

The Finance Ministry, sources said, has written to the External Affairs Ministry pointing out that Modi continues to stay in the UK for a long time even though his passport has been revoked. The matter is, however, sub-judice.
