The UK government on Wednesday hailed a significant drop in healthcare visa applications following its restrictions on family dependents, even as hundreds of Indian care workers who find themselves unfairly stranded in the country appeal for help.

Amid ongoing review for post-study work visa, official statistics released on Thursday showed Indian students are showing signs of being turned off from applying for British universities with a four per cent drop in the applications from the country.

Fees and health surcharge paid towards the UK's National Health Service by visa applicants from around the world, including Indians, are set to rise "significantly" to meet the country's public sector wage increase, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

The UK is now providing visit visas to travellers from India within 15 days of receiving applications, British High Commissioner Alex Ellis said on Friday.

The visa website will be ready in the near future so that applicants can apply for their visa on the same, the High Commission of India in London informed.

The United Kingdom is on track to get back to processing Indian visa applications within its standard 15-day period, said Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India.

There has been a mounting backlog for Indian visas in recent months, as applicants complain of a shortage of appointments available and lengthy processing times.

Stressing the need for the right documentation, he said, “Make sure you’ve included the right documentation. That is the offer letter from the university – the CAS, the TB certificate and your proof of funding.”
