President Barack Obama said Sunday that American leadership was helping make gains in the global fight against climate change as he tried to reassure world leaders assembling for a historic conference in Paris that the US can deliver on its own commitments.

Negotiators reached a surprise resolution to thorny issues relating to forest protection at UN climate talks on Tuesday, increasing the odds it will be included in a new global climate deal due to be agreed in Paris in December, experts said.

"If you want a paradigm shift you cannot be among the blue chips and be super conservative."

A new global deal on climate change, due to be agreed in Paris this year, must pave the way for an ambitious rise in funding for developing countries as their climate-related costs grow, the head of the UN's key climate fund said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday that he will travel to the Climate Conference in Peru next week and is hopeful that delegates will draft an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
