Undertrial Freed

The Haryana government has decided to release convicted prisoners with up to seven years of sentences and undertrials ones liable to get as long jail terms on conviction, on parole or bail, in order to decongest prisons, state Jail Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala said on Wednesday.

Three armed men fired in the air, sprayed chilly powder on the staff and cops at a hospital and escaped after freeing an undertrial in Panchkula today, the police said.

In big relief for thousands of prisoners waiting for their trial in jail, the Supreme Court today said they can be released if they have served half the sentence for the offence they have been charged with.

Four under-trial men escaped police custody with the help of a group of 12 armed men from outside a court in Alwar, police said. A police team had brought the prisoners in a vehicle to to the sessions court at Tijara in connection with a loot case.
