The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered the delisting of another 86 'non-existent' registered unrecognised political parties, raising the number of such organisations red flagged by the poll body for failing to comply with electoral rules to 537.

The Income Tax department today launched raids in multiple states as part of a tax evasion probe against registered unrecognised political parties (RUPP) and their alleged dubious funding, official sources said.

Tightening the noose around unrecognised registered political parties for flouting rules, including those related to filing of contribution reports and indulging in "serious" financial impropriety, the Election Commission on Wednesday.

The number of registered unrecognised political parties increased more than twice between 2010 and 2021 and disproportionately during the year of parliamentary elections, poll rights group Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said.

Unrecognised political parties received Rs 25.27 crore in donations between 2013-14 and 2015-16, with only 5 per cent of such registered outfits filed their contribution details, says a report.

Manipur Election Watch and the ADR have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 98 candidates from 13 political parties, including five national parties, four state parties, four unrecognised parties and nine independent candidates who are contesting inthe second phase.
