US President Barack Obama will today announce plans to send up to 250 more military personnel to Syria, according to a senior administration official, intensifying US assistance to rebels as a ceasefire falters.

The United States is expected to announce today plans for a new military base in Iraq's Anbar province and the deployment of around 400 additional US trainers to help Iraqi forces in the fight against Islamic State, a US official said.

Moscow on Friday warned that the presence of foreign military personnel could destabilise the situation in Ukraine, following deployment of 300 US trainers there this week.

Pakistan would allow US military trainers, who were kicked out of the country following the November 26 NATO raid, to return as early as April or May and would also reopen the crucial supply route for the coalition forces based in Afghanistan.
