In a major step towards forging the US-India ties in civil-space collaboration, a transport aircraft from the US air force carrying a NASA - ISRO satellite landed in Bengaluru today.

NISAR, an earth observation satellite jointly developed by US space agency NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was handed over by the US Air Force to India on Wednesday. The satellite will be used by ISRO for a variety of purposes including agricultural mapping, and monitoring landslide-prone areas.

NASA officials have confirmed the payload integration of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR), which is expected to be shipped to India after testing for integration with the satellite and eventually with the launch vehicle. NISAR is a joint earth-observation mission between ISRO and the US space agency NASA.

The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite is expected to be launched by 2022 as India and the US have decided to share Space Situational Awareness Information, which will catalyse efforts to create the conditions for a safe and sustainable space environment.
