Uttar Pradesh Liquor Smuggling

Liquor worth around Rs 40 lakh allegedly meant to be distributed ahead of the panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh and for smuggling into neighbouring Bihar has been seized from the city, police said on Thursday.

The Uttar Pradesh government's recently revised excise policy has created quit a flutter among its residents over the cap on volume of alcohol that can be stored at home, and the need for a licence to exceed this limit to prevent "action".

A man has been arrested after 24,000 litres of smuggled liquor was seized in Shamli district, the police said today.

In a major haul, 626 cartons of illegal liquor worth Rs 25 lakh were seized in two separate cases in Muzaffarnagar, police said today.

Around 195 containers of liquor worth around Rs 8 lakh were seized from a canter by police during a vehicle check in front Kotwali Jaithera Police station.

Two persons have been arrested and 1,500 cartons of liquor worth Rs 36 lakh, allegedly being smuggled from Etah to West Bengal, were seized from their possession.
