Uttarakhand Cloudburst Deaths

A series of cloudbursts hit different parts of Uttarakhand early on Saturday killing four people while 10 went missing as rivers breached their banks and washed away bridges, officials said.

The death count in a cloudburst that wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district two days ago has risen to 10 with the recovery of three more bodies from a village on Wednesday, officials said.

Seven members of a family were killed when their house was razed to the ground by huge boulders that rolled down the hill following a cloudburst in Pauri district of Uttarakhand today.

Three more bodies were recovered from the debris in the cloudburst-hit villages of Pithoragarh, raising the death toll in rain-related incidents in the state to 18 while searches were on for as many missing people by the Army, para-military and police personnel.

With the recovery of two more bodies, the death toll in the heavy rains in Uttarakhand rose to 14 today while about ten rivers and rivulets were in spate across the state and traffic disrupted on several routes due to landslides.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the loss of lives due to cloudburst and heavy rains in Uttarakhand and hoped normalcy would return there at the earliest.
