Uttarakhand High Court on Monday refused to give any more time to former chief ministers of the state to vacate the government bungalows occupied by them in the city, saying they will have to do so by December 16, the deadline set by the state government.

As Uttarakhand battles the widespread damage caused by torrential rain, the state's weather department has said that warnings were sent out to the government which warned them not only of very heavy rains but also urged them to move people to safer areas.

Around 1,200 tourists still remain stranded in Himachal Pradesh after last week's floods ravaged parts of the state and neighbouring Uttarakhand. 1,200 people have been rescued from Himachal's Kinnaur district so far; 20 people have died due to floods across the state.

The union government is reported to be considering a rollback of petrol price hike by up to Rs 2.5 a litre.

This will make the fuel cheaper by Rs 1.87 in the state as compared to the rest of the country.

The Congress, battling allies and Opposition alike, can heave a sigh of relief, at least in Uttarakhand. In a definite climbdown from his earlier stand, Harish Rawat - who led a rebellion against Vijay Bahuguna being made as the Uttarakhand Chief Minister - has said he remains loyal to Congress.

After a photo finish in Uttarakhand, Congress, which emerged as the single largest party, staked claim to form the government in Uttarakhand today. It paraded the three independent MLAs and the lone legislator from the Uttarakhan Kranti Dal (UKD) in its support before Governor Margaret Alva.

Despite falling short of numbers in Uttarakhand, the BJP today claimed that it will form the next government in the hill state. "We will play Holi in Uttarakhand... Congress will not be able to form government there," BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar told reporters.
