Vaccine Derived Polio Virus

A type of poliovirus derived from vaccines has been detected in London sewage samples, the World Health Organization and British health officials said Wednesday, adding that more analysis was underway.

India remains polio free and there is no need to panic about the Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) detected in Hyderabad earlier this month, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said on Thursday.

India continues to be polio free, the government said in a statement released after a strain of the virus was found in samples of sewage water in Hyderabad. The strain found is a vaccine derived poliovirus or VDPV.

A 10-month-old infant from Kanhapur village in Dharur tehsil of the Beed district in Maharashtra has been found to have polio infection.
