A special Varanasi court on Wednesday sentenced gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari to life imprisonment in a three-decade-old fake gun licence case.

Jailed gangster Mukhtar Ansari was today convicted by a court in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi in a 32-year-old murder case. A five-time MLA, Ansari has been charged with the murder of a Congress leader in 1991.

Uttar Pradesh parliamentarian Atul Rai, in jail since 2019, was today acquitted of a rape charge by a court in Varanasi. He will however not be released from prison because of other pending cases against him.
